Shinigami

The personification of death who runs DWMA to create Death Scythes.

In the fictional Death City, Nevada, stands the Death Weapon Meister Academy (DWMA), led by its headmaster Shinigami. Also known as Death, he is the personification of death itself and runs this unique training facility for humans who can transform into weapons and their wielders, called meisters. His primary goal is to oversee the development of these teams so they can collect the souls of 99 evil humans and one witch in that specific order. Success transforms a weapon partner into a "Death Scythe," fit for use by Shinigami; failure means the process must start all over again.

Lore & Background

Shinigami serves as the headmaster of the DWMA, a school dedicated to maintaining order against chaos. He is responsible for guiding teams like Maka Albarn and Soul Eater, Black Star and Tsubaki Nakatsukasa, and his own son, Death the Kid, with partners Liz and Patty Thompson. The students work under his authority to hunt evil souls and witches. His leadership was tested when Medusa's group successfully revived Asura, the first kishin who had previously nearly plunged the world into madness before being sealed beneath the DWMA by Shinigami. Despite this setback, Shinigami called in Death Scythes from around the globe to aid in the fight against threats like Arachnophobia and later orchestrated a temporary alliance with witches to launch an attack on the moon.

In Their Own Story

The narrative of Shinigami's involvement centers on the containment and eventual re-sealing of Asura. After Medusa forced Crona to transform into a kishin and revive Asura, the evil god left to spread chaos after a brief battle with Shinigami. When Asura's madness threatened the world again, Shinigami coordinated the defense against Arachne's organization. Following Maka's kill of Arachne and Medusa's subsequent betrayal, the conflict escalated until DWMA forces launched an attack on the cartoonish moon where Asura was located. The battle saw Crona absorb Asura before being overtaken by him. Ultimately, Shinigami's strategy culminated in Maka, Black Star, and Death the Kid restoring Crona's sanity to defeat Asura, sealing him back on the moon with his own blood. In the aftermath of these events, following Shinigami's death, his son Death the Kid became the new Shinigami.

Reader's Guide

Shinigami acts as the strategic commander for the DWMA students and their partners. His role involves setting the specific criteria for becoming a Death Scythe: collecting 99 evil human souls followed by one witch soul. He manages alliances, such as the truce with Medusa to annihilate Arachnophobia and the temporary alliance with witches to fight Asura. While he engages in combat, as seen during Asura's initial revival, his primary function is oversight and resource management, calling upon Death Scythes worldwide when threats like Arachnophobia emerge. His tenure ended following the final battle on the moon, where his death paved the way for Death the Kid to assume leadership and establish a peace treaty with the witches.
